the antidote

after a couple weeks of fine French dining and a few great meals in London, what would you crave?
Got that right - burnt ends and slaw!
Long Island City is just across the 59th Street Bridge from Bloomingdale's, and is cooler than Williamsburg because it's still what zoning experts and real estate lawyers would call a 'mixed use area,' that is, there's light industry, small apartment buildings, office buildings and little houses.
I hope you can see the little white clapboard house with picket fence, it's between a factory and a taxi garage, just down the street from a barbeque place, John Brown's Smokehouse.


Oh, yeah.
The smoker is always going, and between that and the artists creating works of acrylic out on the street, it's easy to locate.

The brisket is also worth elevating your cholesterol, but it vanished before I could focus. And so did my 16-oz glass of draft Weihenstefan Hefeweissbier. As I said: the antidote.

    1. Hi, AA, thanks! we were very lucky, our house is not right on the water, and so except for a power outage when we weren't there, no detectable damage. I would note that last spring we had a tree that was awfully close to the roof trimmed back, this turned out to be a stroke of genius!

  2. You are right sometimes the simplest things are what you crave the most. Especially if you add good beer. So good that places like this still exist.

Hi, ajc, we had stumbled home Saturday night, woke early Sunday, charged out to the beach to check "Flintstone Manor," charged back the same night, and to our absolute delight, the Smokehouse was open, undamaged, and cooking. Just what we needed. Oh, and also we arrived for dinner just as Happy Hour prices hit the bar. $5 for a 16-oz glass. Not bad.

    2. Of course it is. We should compare notes on the other food groups. Oh gosh, I'm excited if I ever go to NY again to consult with you. The family on husby's side went on a journey back home a few years ago. I listened to their oh the bagels, pizza, bakeries stories endlessly before getting there. Unfortunately, most things were a disppointment since things had changed over the years. The amazing thing was the Chinese restaurant that was stil fabulously authentic and delicious after more than 20 years since they were last there.

    1. Hi, ina! I was reading the list of beers, I found myself thinking that breweries would make a great theme for a tour. As a kid (when I was dating the soccer player), I fell into conversation with one of his fans, a Braumeister, who gave me wonderful advice: wherever you are in the world, if the water is doubtful, drink the beer, because beer will not make if the water is dirty or contains bad bacteria. See? Even then I was into healthy living!

  6. Hot Bar B Q! I love places like this. French food is fine but there is nothing like down home barbecue. My favorite back home in Atlanta is Fat Matt's Rib Shack. Tiny little place with a stage squished into one end, live blues every night of the week. You may end up sharing a table but it's all good.     2. Yes, I am born and raised in ATL, Country Club of the South, actually. This is why I am always talking about how much I freeze living in Canada. I don't know that I'll ever get used to being so cold.

      Definitely try Fat Matt's if you can, and give yourself time to hang around and hear the band.

    4. I was just thinking the same thing, adding Fat Matt's to my BBQ bucket list. OMG, a pig on their signage. Wonder if I can make it there during a flight stopover but I'd want to stay for the music.
