too rainy and foggy for Manhattanhenge, Fred stands at Crewhenge

Manhattanhenge is the local name for the view of the sun rising and setting that you can get when you stand on a crosstown street and look east - or west - on certain days at dawn or sunset. It's breathtaking, and can make you wonder if ancient pagans really knew something after all.
Last night's Manhattanhenge was rained out. I have high hopes for tonight's, but just in case, let me share with you another contemporary archeological find:
part of the avenue of 5 statues on each long side,
one at each end of the avenue
Crew-henge!
Standing stones have appeared on the plaza at Rockefeller Center, and if you stand at the right spot and stare between the right stones, you will see these words in golden letters:
J.CREW
This is where a lecture on the perils of idolatry might be expected, but if you've read this far, you're probably giving yourself that talk each time you check your bank balance.

  1. Good Grief! These do not belong there, I know just where that is. Temporary?

    1. Hi, Lane, I assume so. Not the silliest thing that ever stood there, but close.

  2. The standing stones appear to be an Inukshuk.

    1. wow, thanks, xoxo, I followed your link and what a great catch!

And somehow it makes perfect sense to have J.Crew marked by friendly giants that say things like "this is what you're looking for" and "someone has been here before you."

    2. J.Crew and their subliminal suggestion. As long as the "someone has been here before you." does not apply to a used return. LOL

  3. I am with xoxo - wonder why they are there? That is "my" crew Fred, and I have been known to worship there the odd time, to often tragic results!

    1. Given their meaning, they're there to give comfort to those who seek.

  4. This is hilarious. These Inukshuk statues are very popular here and especially in Northern Ontario, every camping spot and cottage has one, usually built by the kids!

    1. hi, Dani, now I'm wondering if Dear Leader has any on his demesne at Montauk. Almost worth a drive out - but not on the first sunny weekend of the summer!

  5. Oh its exactly like that in NY - I stood there and there is something primordial about it. J Crew are right where they need to be!!! I remember renting a bus and all my friends going to the real Stonehenge and being so disappointed. Think we headed off to the nearest pub, we were such plebs.

    1. ah, yes, the reverent murmurs of the devoted shoppers.

Pub sounds good, bet that's what the Druids did after a little sacrificial ardor.

    1. hi, ajc, my first thought when I saw those creatures was that they were monumental tributes to Dear Leader.

    1. Hi, ruth, the prettiest JC store is the one at Fifth Avenue and 16th Street, but I must say the company makes a real effort to keep them attractive. The rush of people folding and hanging and straightening and tidying behind one reminds me of my late MIL when she had company, perhaps not quite as frenzied but close.

for some reason I'm now wondering how the giant creatures would look in giant nerd glasses.

    2. Snort! They'd need a statement necklace and a bright red lip too!

As Alice Roosevelt Longworth said, if you've got anything bad to say, sit next to me! No, really, please remember to be kind, and don't say anything fred's mother would not approve of (Diner's mom didn't approve of anything. Including fred.)
