This jacket became such a favorite that at the tail end of the season I bought a second one in case of a buffalo emergency. Fortunately there's no buffalo shortage this year, and I'm equipped for whatever the winter may bring. And next winter, and the one after that.

As the owner of this jacket (twice), I can assure you that the thick wool outer layer and nylon plush (not Sherpa) lining do not lend themselves to a thin belt, as shown in one of the catalog pics, replicated below.
Nor is the jacket's adorable collar a "standing" collar. Not even close. It was, and continues to be, just like the collar on a J.Crew boy shirt, only of course thicker.
The sizing was way off, too, and the first time I tried one, it was grossly boxy. A few weeks later, the light dawned, and I stopped in the store again and tried on a succession of smaller ones until I fell in love. Yeah, I'm easy.

Do you have a beloved buffalo check item or two? or are you still playing the field?
I love a good buffalo check too and have a pea jacket I pull out this time every year. It's such a cheerful pop of colour in winter when we could do with some brightness.
ReplyDeletehi, Jen, yes, even the fabric on the bolt looks warm and cheerful!
DeleteI remember this jacket, definitely not a candidate for belting! Overall I loved it too but sadly the sleeves weren't long enough. I have a small herd now, only a buffalo check scarf, but I'm definitely warming to the idea of new jacket.
ReplyDeletehi, ABC, the belt was a ridiculous idea. My herd is growing, RL Men's cashmere scarf - something of an oxymoron, buffalo checks and cashmere, no?- and a heavy flannel shirt from Woolrich. Expecting delivery of pajama bottoms later today and then I should really close the herd.
DeleteI am too big to wear a check print - it seems to suit slimmer builds. Funny because this look doesn't make it over here as much. It's smaller checks or tweeds but not this pattern. I like it but dont think I could carry it off...
ReplyDeletehi, Naomi, well, the first appearance of the large red-and-black check seems to have been shirts for lumberjacks and miners. I guess the "big guy" aura is hanging on.
DeleteI love this pattern but think I would look awful in it -- my shoulders are too broad.
ReplyDeletehi, m, sadly, a finely fitted shoulder line with perfectly aligned checks is not one of J.Crew's strong points. I had to try on more than a few jackets before getting one that hit it right. This was not a big deal for me as there are JC stores all around me, there are times when it's like living in a mall, but ordering from a distance? a gamble.
DeleteWFF, love that jacket/shirt. I guess I am off to EBay to see if I can find one.
ReplyDeleteHappy hunting! I should point out that with the thick plush lining, it's quite a warm jacket and would be suitable for wear as a shirt only if you lived in an igloo.
DeleteI had two buffalo check jackets, one a vintage J crew and one from Talbots which have been donated since I am a size smaller. My current inventory is just a beautiful cashmere scarf/wrap in an oversized check purchased last year at Talbots. Actually I have it in both the traditional red/black and also one in a camel/black color way. I also admit to succumbing to this years Crew down vest even though I had sworn off any more vests. What can I say, I am a sucker for buffalo checks especially in December. They are traditional and festive to me. Based on other comments I think I don't pay enough attention to what looks best on me. If I like it, I buy it and smile. That seems to work just fine.
ReplyDeleteYes, there's no point in buying what other people think one should have if it doesn't bring you some cheer. Especially this time of year!
