me, me, me

Loping through websites and catalogues and stores this time of year requires blinders - there's always a distracting item or five that would look great on me, or be a great replacement for a tired something in the living room, or that I really ought to try. Part of this is because hunting for presents takes me outside of my customary hunting grounds, so I'm seeing a lot of stuff for the first time, and - we're all friends here, right? - part of this is selfishness and vanity. Nobody's perfect, and if you know your faults you can address them. Or, as the mood strikes you, indulge them just a little.

F'rinstance, graphic sweaters and tees. I resisted overpriced poultry. I resisted crosseyed birds of prey. I took an alleged hedgehog back to Anthro, showed them a picture of a porcupine, and demanded a refund. I also just returned a bunny tee to Anthro because my chest distorted the print in such a manner as to make the rabbit look not only lascivious but also affirmatively hostile. "This is not a nice rabbit," I explained sadly.

And then I saw an ad for this sweater. Macy's. Almost an hour on the phone with lovely and determined helpers, because the ad had the web i.d. number wrong. Those ladies were aces.
Awwww. An escargot in a goofy beret. No misspelled misused foreign expressions. No notable ocular problems. No traces of garlic and parsley, but I can live with that. An argument could be made that I have taken enough chances with cheap cashmere, to which I reply that I'm not taking a chance, I know the risks, and I accept them. The snail is on its way. Fittingly, it's taking its time to get here...

I was told that it's no longer available on the web, but some stores still have it. You're on your own.

  1. I have resisted the animal trend although Em and I do try to find the most ridiculous...and there are a ton out there... for the other to try on when we are out shopping. The snail is quite cute.

    1. Hi, BB! I once had an assistant whose prior experience of office life was watching sitcoms. Capable and energetic, just naive. She got very upset when she learned that our firm didn't do National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day.

  2. Cute sweater Fred. I always find things for myself and the home while I am browsing for gifts. I bookmark them and come back a few days later. Some are still calling me and I am trying to resist, hoping when I come back there is a "page not found" message to make the decision for me.

    1. Hi, xoxo, I too rely on fate to hold down impulse spending!

Well, the snail isn't here yet, I hope it turns out to be something a chesty girl can wear.

  3. Remembering that you are out shopping for OTHERS is always a problem for me at Christmas time. Far too many lovely things and I know what fits me. I also like the whimsical critters. Guess I am not going to outgrow it!

  4. Fred I saw that sweater somewhere and I admired it very much. I thought it would be a funny thing for me to wear as I am famous in my family for ordering escargots all over Paris. Let us know how it fits/feels when it arrives!

  6. This "escargot" sweater is so cute. I am glad you were able to score it at Macy's. I definitely have a problem with buying critter sweaters. It's like they are multiplying in my closet!

    1. Hi, Ina, well, I just checked my Macy's account and the charge hasn't even appeared yet. This is really moving at a snail's pace.

  8. Love how you describe the purchase of the whimsical cashmere escargot. Actually my friend tells me that even the cashmere on that italian brand (it will come to me in a second) doesn't last...Brunicelli cucinelli something

    1. I have a few really old cashmeres that haven't pilled or fuzzed up, they're from Braemar, but I'm not sure who owns the company these days.

Anyway, still waiting for that delivery!

  9. Very chic escargot sweater! If you had bought one with a hare on it, it might have been despatched with speed but no doubt have languished in a post office somewhere en route.

  10. I recently got J.Crew's camel sweater which have similar colors to that cute snail version, so I guess I am safe from the snail, but this does increase my critter sweater count up another notch. I better break my menagerie from last year out too!

  11. Cashmere, I like it! I saw this from afar this morning, I'm pretty sure. I didn't venture in to look closer. Hope it arrives and is worth the wonder & wait.
