see you in my dreams...

We're very grateful for all the good wishes that came our way, and we're very grateful that all's well at Flintstone Manor. We're 5 minutes from open ocean, yet luckily did not lose electric power. We did lose cable tv, phone and internet for about 4 or 5 hours - so much for the TripleThreat Bargain Package! but all's working again. I was worried about having to clean up shards of glass, and Himself was afraid of starving to death (like that would happen). Neither worry materialized. At some point tomorrow we'll make our way back into the city and take stock at Flintstone Towers. Meanwhile, must say I was very impressed by Mayor Bloomberg's calm way of repeatedly urging people not to be idiots. Amazing how frank and open one can be when running for office is not an option.  Now I shall go and say encouraging things to the iPhone.

  1. So glad to hear you got through the storm with minimal disruption. I unsubscribed from cable TV service, so have not watched the (I'm told) round the clock coverage of Irene. Hope things are back to normal soon for you and everyone.

  2. Thanks, Closet Crisis! There were a few trees down, power outages to the east & west, and we were just lucky. I restock with big chunky untippable candles every year (Target, West Elm, Pottery Barn) because our phone and utility wires are above ground. Above ground means in the trees, which in turn means tempting the weather beyond all reason. I guess this year the candles "kept the house safe from tigers."

  3. I'm laughing away at " himself was worried about starving to death" apparently we're getting the tail of it on Friday so it will be a wellie day for me.

  4. Tabitha, that was serious. All the emergency advice includes getting fridge & freezer as cold as possible before any anticipated loss of power, that is, not opening them while they're getting extra cold, and then in case there is a power loss, not opening the fridge at all or at most only once or twice a day. Can't tell you how stressful he found this. Anticipation is almost always the worst part, no?

  5. No glass shares, no starving and kept your power? Sounds like luxury hurricane living. Seriously though, glad you are ok. Agree, Bloomberg did a good job. Now let's see if he can get the MTA going again...

  6. It's good to hear that you didn't have to deal with too much damage.
And thank you for the song, I had forgotten how much I like it!

  7. mommydearest, we were on the "wind" side as opposed to the "wet" side of the 'cane, so after a few more cups of coffee, we'll go out to see how the trees did and how the beachfront fared. Our sad joke about beach erosion is that in another 5 years we'll own valuable beachfront property. And in still another 5, none at all. But I do think the house did ok. whew.

cris, "Goodnight Irene" was no. 1 on everyone's hit parade for another 15 minutes of fame.

  8. Excellent that all went well.
I am guessing that Himself is one of the opening-the-fridge-and-staring-inside types!

  9. Hi, Dani, thanks, yes, that's what he considers exercise because he has to arise from couch and walk to kitchen to do it.

Good Morning Wellfedfred. Very glad to hear you all are "safe and sound." Having lived most of my life in the Southeast, I have a special interest in, and understanding of, hurricanes. I watched the coverage all weekend and everytime they mentioned This Hampton or That Hampton, I thought of you. You all were brave to stay in Flintstone Manor! Thank you for posting so us followers would know you are enjoying a morning cup of coffee!!!

  11. Hi, SouthernBellePhD, thanks for your good wishes! Our handyman just stopped by to see how things were, and told us there was damage just a few hundred feet to the north of us and serious flooding just to the south. So we really were just plain lucky. As for the choice to stay out here, it was just a little more appealing than being trapped on a high floor with no elevators working.

  12. So glad you're safe and sound. Hoping the towers are in good shape too. Thanks for letting us know you're well that Himself kept his priorities in tack ;-)

  13. Hi, JulieStyles, thanks for your good wishes!
Yes, isn't it good to know that some things just don't/won't/can't change?

  14. Glad you are well-fed-- still-- and powered up. We lost power up here for over 24 hours-- a bit mysterious given the relative non-event compared with some big nor'easters we get. I was able to make peach jam and can some tomatoes regardless thanks to a gas stove.

  15. Hi, Lane, thank you for the good wishes, and I'm glad you're fine too! And so is the tomato sauce in our freezer, since Himself refused to believe I'd cooked up a bunch of little round red popsicles (6-oz containers).

As Alice Roosevelt Longworth said, if you've got anything bad to say, sit next to me! No, really, please remember to be kind, and don't say anything fred's mother would not approve of (Diner's mom didn't approve of anything. Including fred.)
